Yvette Shields is a native Washingtonian. Living in the city which is the seat of our nation’s government along with the teaching and mentoring of her late grandfather, Joseph B. Carter, she was introduced into the political arena very early in life. Her grandfather, who was also a Washingtonian, spent many years in the political field organizing at the grassroots level. This firsthand resource afforded Yvette a great advantage in learning the “ropes”. She was one of the young people he trained in door-to-door canvassing, passing out literature for candidates running for at-large or council seats as well as
mayoral races. Since her grandfather was a delegate to the Democratic National Convention (1980) and chairman of the D. C. Democrats’ voter registration campaign, Yvette has found it an honor to share the teachings of her grandfather in her works.
Yvette served in the federal government for several years as a Program Analyst for the Department of Navy, United States Marine Corps. She then was employed at a Home Health Care company, where she served as its Assistant Director. When Yvette is asked what is her job, she responds, “I have four jobs – between my full-time job, working with non-profit organizations, spending precious time with my family, and the daily rigorous workout at the gym to keep fit and/or running in preparation to run a second marathon—and I only get paid for one”.
